The story of a banker turned storyteller – Bhakti Mathur

From being an avid reader to finding answers for her growing boys, Bhakti’s association with books has come full circle. After spending 22 long years in the banking and finance sector in Hong Kong, Bhakti chose to become a writer. A writer – not because she had decided to become one someday, but because when she wanted to read stories about Indian festivals to her sons, she could not find one book which the little minds could relate to. She felt disappointed and disheartened but was not ready to give up. Instead, decided to write these books herself. And thus, started the journey of Bhakti’s ‘Amma Tell Me’ picture book series.

Bhakti launched the ‘Amma Tell Me’ series with ‘Amma Tell Me About Holi’ in 2011 and since then has written 12 books on Indian festivals and mythology. She believed that every child should know the stories about India’s rich culture and heritage, irrespective of their location. Since she grew up reading books in her mother’s library and listening to stories from her grandmother and nanny, Bhakti wanted her children to also know them.

Bhakti’s attempt at storytelling was getting her appreciation from all corners. Parents were enjoying reading Bhakti’s books as much as the children were enjoying the vivid portrayal. This gave a big boost to Bhakti’s morale and she decided to go a step further with her next series – ‘Amma Take Me’. In this series, Bhakti introduces the reader to the dynamic history of the major faiths of India and its leading places of worship including temples, mausoleums, churches, and gurudwaras.

From bank to books, Bhakti’s story is one of passion and diligence. She took the plunge into the literary world without the support of any publisher and today works with some of the leading publishing houses along with being a freelance journalist. A successful writer, an engaging storyteller, a runner, a mother and a wife, Bhakti is an example for all those who think that it’s too late to start afresh in life.
