One Indian Girl

If you are a voracious reader with an air of geek-vanity, you’ll claim to despise Chetan Bhagat and call him a ‘wannabe writer’. I do that too, even though I always end up reading his books.

When I picked up his latest book ‘One Indian Girl’ (a. It was dirt cheap; b. I wanted to read it before criticising it), I wasn’t quite sure if I could manage to finish the book without getting irked by it. However, I literally binge-read it in 2 days and ended up begging for more.

The book is about a highly successful I-Banker, Radhika Mehta, who is trying to find a balance between work and love in the man’s world. Brought up with a notion that her wheatish skin and over-education were men-repellent, she meets some incredible guys who convince her otherwise. However, they end up falling prey of their own male chauvinistic mentality that a girl cannot have it all and she’ll have to make some tough choices in order to be with them.

Throughout the book, Radhika is frantically running around and juggling everything on her plate: her soaring career, her messed-up love life, her marriage-obsessed mother and her beliefs. Like every Indian girl of 2016, she is independent, ambitious and wants to settle down with a man who doesn’t ask her to choose. It’s not because the career is more important than family or vice versa, it’s because she knows that she can handle it all when the time will come.

Strangely, I could see myself in Radhika. I laughed with her, cried with her, got angry with her and felt helpless with her. Being a 25 years old who is earning a living in a big city is exhausting. Yet you put up a brave front and show up to work every day. When life gives you bumps like heartbreaks and pressure of arranged marriage, it takes away a piece from you. Yet you pretend that it’s just another breakup or fight with your mom, and move on. Life is hard if you are a Radhika. Yet you fight like a warrior and make it look like there were zero casualties (even if you died a little).

In my opinion, Chetal Bhagat did a commendable job in ‘One Indian Girl’. I’m amazed at how he captured the real essence of a modern Indian girl and presented it in a totally relatable character of Radhika. He also managed to expose the inhibitions and insecurities of an Indian man in 2016 that has less to do with a woman’s beauty and more to do with her brain. Although I found the synopsis quite unconvincing and irritating, the book was a nice weekend read. Kudos!

Girls, read this book and know that you are the real deal. Never settle for anything less.

Guys, read this book and know who you are dealing with. And grow up enough to embrace it.

Leesa Mohanty, Founder, Nirguna

From being a cine child artist, an accomplished Odissi classical dancer, an author and an HR professional, Leesa is a multifaceted personality with a strong inclination towards Indian culture and tradition. Leesa quit working in the corporate world after working for nearly 10 years to establish Nirguna Centre for Excellence to promote Indian culture through dance and music in Mumbai in 2008. A fellowship (Junior) from HRD Ministry, GOI in Odissi and her innovative approach to dance training prompted her to author the book, “Dancing is Fun”. The Centre For Excellence grew in popularity and she was globe trotting conducting workshops. Nirguna Centre for Excellence (the dance studio) was in a growth phase; new students, many performances, NCPA, workshops abroad, etc was in line.

Just when life was beautiful and buzzing, destiny had something written for her. In 2013, travelling back on a trans-Atlantic flight she suffered a brain arena and then during the course of treatment she slipped into coma. She suffered from a medical condition called Central Pontine Myelinolysis, this sudden jerk came to her at the peak of her dancing career where she had plans to open a couple of more dancing studios in Mumbai. She had to be airlifted to Mumbai from Frankfurt. Doctors at Nanavati Hospital told her family there is less than 5% chance of recovery and even if she had recovered, she would had to suffer from acute paralysis. Suddenly life came to a standstill.

This accident forced her to change directions in life and made her foray into designing and promoting handlooms. Nirguna was thus reborn in 2014. The “Rural Manager” inside her found solace in handlooms and handicrafts and thus, Nirguna included “promoting Rural Livelihoods” under it’s mission. Leesa grew from being a designer-entrepreneur to social-entrepreneur.

In a few months, once she stabilized she was back home feeling so lifeless that she could barely move in the initial weeks at home. But, she had a special reason to live her then 8-year old child, who was the reason for her strength. She went through her toughest moments trying to hold herself and her family together. There were many times, she would fall apart but looking at her child she would lift her spirit.

Accepting reality is the toughest part. Once you accept it then only you can change it. Life once again had plans for her but this time, it was more fulfilling and promising. Nirguna was reborn with a different and more meaningful purpose.

After nearly a year of rehabilitation at home she could not walk properly, she realised dancing was not an option. She then decided to still open but a boutique following her passion in life, sarees. She started helping the rural folk. Thus, Nirguna was born again in May, 2014. In her words, “I found new meanings to life and a better purpose to live for sure”.

Life is beautiful and blessed for Hemali today,when she looks back. Born and brought up in a middle class gujarati service class family in south Mumbai,life was not very easy. She struggled herself to study and later to learn new hobbies.

During her school days along with Bharatanatyam, she also learnt singing. Given the hobbies that she choose, she made her initial appearences in a few school program in singing competition and in debates.At this early age, it was quite an accomplishment.

Her turning point in life came during her long summer break,when she was in 10th grade enjoying her holidays,alongwith other hobby classes. It was then that she choose to learn chocolate making too.

Way back in the 80s, it was quite challenging, lengthy and tedious process where there were no modern day facilities. Most of her pocket money was spent on pics being clicked.Promoting her work was tough, she use to take her baked cakes to get them clicked, over weekend.She took help from a friend, to make the website on a free server, as she didn’t have enough money for a paid website.

Her biggest challenge then was to deliver the chocolates without it loosing it’s shape. After lots of trials and errors, success came in the form of first order from her dad’s office. It made her more confident and she went on to learn the chocolate making course from Catering College, Mumbai.

After she finished her diploma in Home Science from Nirmala Niketan and later graduation done from Jai Hind college, in Arts Faculty. Word of mouth did wonders.

Her hobby turned into profession made her feel happy that post marriage her father in law became her biggest support and later her sister in law too joined her as her partner. Indeed, family support, is the best blessing!!

Her dreams came to reality when she received her first recognition through Midday article in 2012 for chocolate rakhi. Later on came she was nominated and received Stree Astitva Awards under Women’s Economic Forum in 2019, followed by Hastakshar Superprenuer Awards in March 2020, then achieved Growing Buddies and TEOI awards for an successful entrepreneur journey. Recognition continued and received Vyapar Jagat Convention Award in December2020 after which came Growth beats awards in 2021 in March.

She has given a few interviews too by now and have experienced her share of ups and downs too. They make all kinds of chocolates like dark, milk, white, sugar free and vegan. She is extremely happy for the journey so far, as they have diversified into various unique options like couple chocolate, sms boxes, chocolate bouquets and many more items.

It’s been a long journey of three decades, with a few interviews and awards with now being FSSAI registration and MSME registration and IEC registration looking forward for many more smiles on the way.

It was a normal day, when I got connected to Farzana over a video call. A simple muslim girl with pallu on her head, very confidently facing the camera and talking to me. Something was different, about her.

Soon, I met her. She knew her job just too well, perfect the way she came and got seated, out came her tools to get started. We got started,normal casual conversation started.

Often we mistake an appearance and take the liberty of judging someone. Her story almost sounded like a three hour film, but the sad part was that she lived every moment in it. Coming from a strong conservative home, needless to say life was a struggle. A childhood is the blue print of one’s life. Her childhood was her ground, from where she started to learn to struggle and then to succeed. Every moment of her life was a big struggle, she wasn’t allowed to study but she fought her way and she got herself enrolled in a nursing course. It almost seemed that a new life was waiting for her.

Life had different plans for her.,today her eyes sparkle with love when she says, am blessed to be married to the man married. It fills every gap in her life.

Farzana, is a lovely Persian name that means knowledgeable. Today ,she is a name in the field of heena she is a renowned heena artist and her work is called Heena by Farzana. Who could think a qualified confident english speaking girl would follow the passion of heena. But,Farzana doesn’t only applies heena just like any other artists. Alongwith her design, her entire mannerism is so appealing that she is widely reffered.

This is a qualified BSC. DMLT Lab technician,but Farzana’s passion goes beyond her qualifications. Her dream came true when she started her own bridal studio. She felt,all her prayers have been answered,and her joy knew no end.. So far she has dresses thousands of hands and won hearts. The sand particles mingling with my fingers
Giving a soft silky feel
I found a small circle made in the sand
Wondered for a long time,
What it is ?
Walking further found four small nail prints,
Thinking to be something mysterious
My curiosity grew
Kept walking and walking

Finally found a small foot print in the sand, a left foot probably

Kept following the footprints
Could see a small one old running round and round
Crying and playing with the sand particles
Her sparkling sea green eyes
Her small pierced ears with shining studs
Glowed on her innocent red cheeks
Seeing me, she started walking towards me
Her speed increased as I moved towards her
She came in my arms and hugged me tightly
Her warmth of love could only be felt
My heart could feel her
She said mom
It was me on the sand rolling
My mom’ s love found me
It was impression of my footprints !!!!
